Are there any nonprofit activities that the board of the McGowan Fund does not support?
Yes. The Fund will only make grants to those activities covered in our grant guidelines. For instance, it generally does not entertain requests for funding of advocacy, building funds, capital campaigns, endowments, sponsorships, grants to individuals, or the arts.

Is a McGowan Fund grant application necessary?
Yes. The McGowan Fund requires that every request be made through the Fund’s online application system. The application also indicates the supporting material that must accompany a request.

How often can an organization apply to the McGowan Fund for grants?
The Fund will review only one grant request per year from any organization.

Do you award multi-year grants?
No. The Fund does not make multi-year awards, but welcomes renewal grant requests.

What are our reporting responsibilities after we have been awarded a grant?
Every grant is unique. At a minimum, a final report will be due upon completion of the first anniversary of the grant. Some grants will have interim reporting requirements.

Why do you restrict your grant-making to the stated communities?
The McGowan Fund is governed by a board of directors whose members live in those geographic areas. Members of our board of directors make site visits to organizations in their local communities and steward those programs during the grant period. Given the resolve to be good stewards of all grants awarded, the Fund can only ask board members to oversee projects in their district.

Our organization is headquartered in Chicago, but our program is in Venezuela; are we considered in your geographic region?
No. Your program would not be considered as being within our geographic area. The McGowan Fund does not make grants for programs in any foreign country, regardless of where the sponsoring organization is headquartered.

Are there deadlines for the filing of grant applications?
Yes. The board of directors considers grant requests at three board sessions each year. Deadlines for the submission of applications for those sessions are January 2, May 1, and September 1, respectively. While grant applications must be received via the online application system by those deadlines, we encourage you to submit in advance of those dates. View important dates

Do you accept applications by mail in addition to, or in lieu of, the online system?
No. All applications, Letters of Inquiry, and final reports must be submitted online.
